Ali Bongo is the son of former President Omar Bongo who ruled the country for 42 years. The son was seeking a third term. His wife, sons and daughters are all ministers. He suffered a devastating brain stroke in 2018 that left his body paralysed, but has held on to power.
His family has ruled Gabon since 1967 and he had just won a third 7-year term that the opposition disputed.
